WebM vs MP4: which video container should you use?

Every video you watch on the web is in one of two containers: MP4 or WebM. They do the same job — wrapping video and audio streams into one playable file — but they come from opposite worlds. MP4 is the universal standard with decades of history behind it. WebM is the modern, royalty-free format designed for the web, with better compression per byte. For a web page, WebM is frequently the better choice; for everything else, MP4.

The container vs the codec

A container is just a box. MP4 usually carries H.264 or H.265 (HEVC) video; WebM usually carries VP8, VP9 or AV1. You can think of the container as the file’s wrapper and the codec as the actual compression. When someone says "WebM plays better on the web," what they usually mean is: VP9 and AV1 compress more efficiently than H.264, so the same quality arrives in a smaller file.

There is a licensing angle too. H.264/HEVC are patent-encumbered; VP9 and AV1 are royalty-free. That is why browsers, video platforms and operating systems keep pushing WebM and AV1 — no one pays per stream.

When WebM wins

When MP4 wins

MP4 remains the safe default for destinations you cannot audit: client deliverables, social platforms, video editors, older devices, iPhone uploads, and any "please send us a video" form. Safari does play WebM now, but macOS editing software and many third-party tools still expect MP4. When in doubt about a destination, ship MP4 — when you control the destination and want the web’s best per-byte quality, convert MP4 to WebM right here in your browser.

Because the conversion happens locally with MediaRecorder, your video never leaves your device — useful for client footage you do not want on a third-party server.

Frequently asked questions

Is WebM better quality than MP4?

At the same file size, WebM (VP9/AV1) is usually higher quality than MP4 (H.264). That is why web platforms love it. For maximum compatibility, MP4 is still the default.

Does WebM play in Safari and on iPhones?

Safari added WebM playback in Safari 14.1 (2021), so modern iOS and macOS devices can play it. Older iOS versions and some apps cannot — a case where MP4 is the safer pick.

Will converting MP4 to WebM reduce quality?

It re-encodes the video, so there is some generational loss — but at a sane bitrate the result is visually indistinguishable while being smaller. Use it when you want smaller web video, not as a way to "clean up" a source.

Can I convert video to WebM on any device?

You need a browser with WebM encoding: Chrome, Firefox or Edge. Optimal Convert hides the WebM options automatically in browsers that cannot encode it, so you always get an honest choice. See [MP4 to WebM](/convert/mp4-to-webm).
